LAURENS COUNTY MUSEUM
116 SOUTH PUBLIC SQUARE
LAURENS, SOUTH CAROLINA
864-681-3678
This will be a one-day exhibit only (August 17th).
The Museum has been graciously approved to exhibit the 200 year old quilt for one day only due to the hands on history behind its creation. This is the quilt that President Andrew Johnson (1808-1875) and Sarah Word Hance (1807-1883), in 1824 made together for their special day. Sarah's initials are on the quilt and a space was left to place the initials of Andrew Johnson after they were married.
Andrew Johnson was a 16-year-old tailor who came to Laurens, South Carolina and fell in love with a local young lady - Sarah Word. He proposed for her hand in marriage but her mother - Elizabeth Vance Word - refused his marriage offer. He soon left town, and made his and way to Tennessee and entering politics. He became President after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865. Sarah stayed in Laurens and later married William Hance.
